des algues microscopiques unicellulaires qui tapissent le fond des cours d\u2019eau et des lacs. Certaines espèces sont plus sensibles à la pollution que d\u2019autres. Par conséquent, la composition en espèces des communautés de diatomées benthiques, par le biais de l\u2019abondance relative de chaque espèce présente, offre une information quant aux conditions environnementales prévalant dans une rivière. En effet, les communautés de diatomées benthiques sont représentatives des variations de la qualité de l\u2019eau des quatre à cinq semaines précédant l\u2019échantillonnage. Elles diffèrent surtout en fonction des concentrations en nutriments, en matière organique, ainsi que de la conductivité (minéraux dissous) et du pH. L\u2019Indice Diatomées de l\u2019Est du Canada (IDEC v.3) est calculé à partir de l\u2019abondance relative des espèces et de leur tolérance aux perturbations. dont les eaux se déversent vers la station d\u2019échantillonnage. Les limites sont générées à l\u2019aide d\u2019un système d\u2019information géographique (SIG) à partir des cartes topographiques, de modèles numériques d\u2019élévation et de modèles d\u2019écoulement, et des limites de bassins versants produites par la Direction principale de l\u2019expertise hydrique (DPEH). L\u2019aire de drainage sert à calculer la superficie drainée en amont de la station d\u2019échantillonnage, à caractériser le territoire drainé (par exemple, pour déterminer l\u2019utilisation du territoire) et à répondre à des besoins spécifiques de cartographie. La classification générale de l\u2019utilisation du territoire a été compilée pour chaque aire de drainage (forestier, agricole, humide, aquatique et anthropique). À noter que le territoire hors Québec n\u2019est pas considéré dans la compilation des pourcentages d\u2019utilisation du territoire.
